The University of Canterbury Application
The University of Canterbury application is one of the easiest university applications in New Zealand. It is so easy that anyone can apply without any difficulties.
Before we start taking advantage of the simplicity of the UC application, let us take a quick look at the application opening and closing dates as well as the entry requirements. Without knowing them, we won’t be able to file our applications.
University of Canterbury Application Opening and Closing Dates
Usually, the University of Canterbury application to enrol opens on 1 October. However, other University of Canterbury application including Qualifications Courses which have limited entry, and also have their own application opening and closing dates.
The key course dates are available on the University of Canterbury page. This particular page shows only enrolment courses that have specific opening and closing dates.
If you are a study abroad or exchange programmes applicant, then you must submit the University of Canterbury application before the due dates. You should also check the UC study abroad page to see some of the study-abroad experiences before you file your application.
Make sure you submit your University of Canterbury application before 1 December since most of the applications close on that day. International applicants must also submit their applications before 1 November because most international applications close before that date.
Application Requirements
The University of Canterbury application requirements come in two parts. One for domestic applicants and the other for international applicants. Domestic applicants might have more options compared to international applicants. But that does not interfere with the application process and acceptance rate.
Whether domestic or international, it is compulsory that applicants meet University Entrance (UE). UE is the same for every university in New Zealand. However, some programme-specific requirements might affect the UE in most cases. It is very important that applicants meet UE. There are also other pathways available if the applicant doesn’t meet UE.
Let us quickly take a look at the application requirements for domestic applicants.
Domestic applicants have three major pathways which are; NCEA, Cambridge and IB diplomas. They are not the only university pathways but they are the major ones for Undergraduate applicants.
National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)
Since NCEA is one of the major pathways, most applicants use it to enter the university. Let us look at the requirements.
The New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) has set the University Entrance (UE) for all universities in the country. Applicants who attain UE will have it appearing on their Record of Achievement. This also means that as soon as your NCEA results are accessible, the university will know if you meet UE or not.
You can also check on the NZQA website to be sure you meet UE before you start filing your applications.
Cambridge International Examination (CIE)
This is also one of the major pathways most people use to enter university. Let us quickly look at the requirements when using this pathway.
- 120 points or more on the New Zealand Cambridge International score table at AS and/or A level in syllabuses from at least three different syllabus groups.
- Grade of D or better in syllabuses from at least three different syllabus groups (Thinking skills not included).
- E grade or better in any one of AS English Language, AS Literature in English or AS Language & Literature in English to meet the literacy requirements.
- D grade or better in IGCSE or GCSE Mathematics to meet the numeracy requirement.
Those are the requirements one must meet when applying with CIE.
International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)
If you have been awarded your IB diploma with a minimum of 24 points, you are eligible to enter the University of Canterbury. You should automatically meet literacy requirements if your diploma was completed with English as the language of any of the following:
- Language A: literature (SL or HL)
- Language A: language and literature (SL or HL), or
- English Language B: (HL)

International Applicants
The University of Canterbury does accept international applicants as well. For international applicants with New Zealand high school qualifications, you must apply using the NZ high school qualification requirements.
If you are applying with a high school or university qualification from another country, then you must check the country requirements of the programme you are applying for. You will also be required to display English proficiency which is key to admission.

Application Process
The UC application is strictly online so all you have to do is visit the application page, and start filing your application.
See?…. It is very simple…Huh?
But let us look at it in a step-by-step order.
Since this is an online application, you must prepare a few items to start your application. Below are some of the things you must prepare.
- Social Security Number if you have one
- Scanned copy of Passport or Birth certificate
Apart from the above, you will also need a device with an active internet connection, email address and phone number. If you have all of them ready, you should follow the steps below to complete your application.
Step #1 – Apply Via myUC
You must signup for “myUC account” if you don’t have one already. If you have one, simply log in and start filing your application.
To register for MyUC account, visit the URL: https://myuc.canterbury.ac.nz/. You should see a page similar to the one in the screenshot below.
You will have to provide all your personal information on this page including nationality and address. This is where you must also upload your scanned documents.

Step #2 – Selecting Courses
You can select courses to enrol in after 1 October every year. Even if you change your mind later, you can change the courses as well.
Select four 15 points courses that will sum up to 120 points for two semesters. That is also considered a full-time workload, especially for first-year applicants.
Step #3 – Accepting Your Offer
After the University of Canterbury has processed your application and verified all of your information, you will be asked to accept your admission. This can be done via the “myUC account”.
All you have to do is to log into your “myUC account”, check the courses and qualifications you applied to and accept your admission.
All these will be accessible via the “myUC account” dashboard.
After accepting your courses, that will be it. Note that you only get to accept your admission if your application is successful.
